Undoubtedly one of the most powerful forces in nature, hurricanes originate off the west coast of Africa and travel thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean to attack the eastern shores of North America. This was the same route the slave ships traveled during the african slave trade. Throughout history this route has become known as The Middle Passage. It was common feeding ground for sharks due to the hundreds of sick and injured slaves thrown overboard during these trips from Africa to America. Generations later sharks still instinctively travel this route in search of food. Ironically, many of the states affected by hurricanes, ie: West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, were also heavily involved in the african slave trade ...coincidence?..maybe...maybe not!
